Real Life Case Study-Apple and Tim Cook
Problem Statement
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple corporation, is asked to make it possible for US Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) to guess and enter the passwords to unlock the iPhone that is found in an apartment and related to the terrorist attacks happened before without fear of the data being deleted by doing so. Apple argues FBI is using the case of this unlocked iPhone to unlock any iPhone that will be needed to open in the future. Tim Cook has to decide whether to follow the government order or not in order to achieve both maintaining support from the users and preventing the leak of Apple cryptography in a few months.
Facts
- Tim Cook is worried that the technology of Apple will be released to the outside world in some way by accepting the request from FBI.
- FBI is not really interested in what is on the phone.
- There are many iPhones needed to be unlocked.
Assumptions
- Once Apple responds to the request from FBI, many more unlocked iPhones would be in a line.
- Breaking the cryptography on the iPhone would let terrorists or “bad people” use it having bad intentions.
- FBI might be using this case to strengthen the bond with Apple and utilize the technology of the company in the future.
Solutions
- Apple and Tim Cook accept the request from FBI and get money from the government.
Advantage: Get support from the unti-terrorism Apple users.
Disadvantage: There is a possibility to let the leak of the technology happen and make the power of terrorists or “bad people” stronger.
2. Apple and Tim Cook reject the request from FBI.
Advantage: Prevent leaking of the technology of Apple and contributing to terrorists and “bad people”.
Disadvantage: Apple might have to fight with FBI on the court.
